I worked on a watercolor tutorial video very recently and I put my heart in it.. it's not about painting specific pictures, but about transferring knowledge you can use for your own work :)

but the problem is what thumbnail to pick x'D

Thmbs by Laovaan

I feel like the second one matches well, because its very neutral.... but it's without personality as well x_X  I feel it would dissappear in the giant youtube jungle.... thats why i picked the first one but I am still not 100% sure...

Anyway here you can watch it!

maybe I will update the thumbnail the next days..let's see :'D

What do you think?

Also, if you have any wishes for upcoming vids, please tell me x)

I love your art. All of your pictures just have this feeling to them that I can't really describe. Like a hidden message, some charming mystery. It's as if your works were full of some inside jokes that the artwork itself wants to share. Like I said, it's really hard to describe.
Never stop drawing. Those artworks deserve to be seen.

(i know you get this a lot) i just saw your "this isnt art" video, and i agree very much. while criticism is important, those stuck up "teachers" really angered me. its so dumb for them to say "OH THIS ISNT ART".

like i feel the same way about abstract paintings. they are not to my liking and i find them to not all look the same, but thats just because i dont really know anything about it and dont care. i would not be the person to critique abstract, and i would definetly NOT deny it to be art, and people who know nothing about more cartoon art shouldnt be trying to dictate what is art and what isnt.

i think what a lot of them are thinking about is anime like SAO where all the faces look the same and there is little variation. i will admit that manga/anime is really over saturated, but that does not apply to all off it, and even if its bad art, its still art.

thank you for that video.

I found you through your Youtube channel, and holy shit your art is BEAUTIFUL.

I just watched your video too! After spending most of my free time painting and drawing as a kid, I decided to study International Business and Management, so I was interested about hearing their business perspective on your art. Thank you for sharing your experience online! We share some 'favourites' here on DeviantArt too so I'm watching you now!

Came back from watching the video. I want to say how admirable it is that you wanted to become a teacher. I think your wide range of ideas can further your student's concept of life and teach them to think for their own on various topics. You don't seem to be the type to push your beliefs into your students and shaping them into what you want them to be, but you allow them to sculpt their own marbled statue of who they are while teaching them how to do it good here and there.

I'm sure your students will find inspiration in you and I wish you luck on this road you choose to take :)

Like the other commenters here, I too had a similar experience with a college art professor discouraging me from doing the type of art I love doing, which was anime/fantasy illustration/cartoons. I know I have told the story to many people sort of as a lesson on how to persevere and pursue your passions no matter what you are told by people who don't hold the same value you do for the art you love to create. My professor told me my work was "not art," "cliche," "only used to make a buck with no real meaning or depth," "just a pretty picture meant to be sold at a comic convention." To which I would say "So?" What if that is my goal and my target market? What if I want to sell my artwork to people who love anime, videogames, comics, cartoons, and fantasy? I love all of those things too!

I'm not a "fine, gallery artist" whose goal is to have a wall in some NYC gallery selling paintings for millions of dollars and hoping to become the next Picasso. I'm not going to be an abstract painter, a modern artist, or a minimalist. I'm not going to make up ridiculous BS meanings to make my pictures profound and deep. I draw pretty fantasy characters and they have no more meaning than just being beautiful to look at and making me and others feel happy.

This professor also tore me down saying my watercolors looked like "paint by numbers" which you probably know are cheap coloring books to help people learn to color in the lines. He also gave me my very first F in an art class which brought down my 4.0 GPA to 3.4 since I was unable to completely redo the project I had been working on for weeks  the night before a major critique. Would have been nice for him to tell me way earlier on he wanted me to change my style of my drawings before failing me, but hey, I ended up drawing a lot of nice inked fish for the rest of that semester and he loved them. Back to straight As. That's basically what college was all about. Do what they want you to do, but do your passion on the side. Want a crappy charcoal scribble? Sure. Want splattered paint on canvas? No problem. I graduated with my bachelor's degree in fine art in 2008, started doing freelance illustration in 2010 and I am still going strong doing what I love.

All I have left to say about those narrow-minded art professors; I don't care for your art either. It does nothing for me aesthetically, emotionally, stylistically, or otherwise. My art is mine, your art is yours, but it's ALL art! <3 Thanks for listening to my rant and I LOVE your artwork, Laovaan! Your watercolors blow my mind, your videos are extremely inspiring and helpful, and you just keep doing what you do! Your artwork is perfect in my eyes. :tighthug:

Seems like a lot of us saw that video.  And yeah, those professors are nothing but self-centered snobs that want to be special snowflakes.  I myself am a big fan of realism and probably wouldn't be able to draw something abstract to save my life.  I'm glad my teachers at college are not like yours.  Then again, I go to a 'technical' college where 90% of the classes are hands-on in preparation for a career, be it in the health sciences or the artistic world or computers, etc.

Good luck to you and keep producing your fantastic ART!

I also saw the "this isn't art" video and I have to say, Im in the same boat as you~ Im a first year student and the professor teaching Illustration at my uni dislikes both manga and western styled comics... I have no idea why he even bothers to teach illustration in the first place. He also said that all manga fans are cringy neckbeards who dont get laid when manga was mentioned in class. So safe to say he and people like him are idiots. I love your work and hope one day I get to be half as good as tou :)
